What: Fleshed Out: Writing & Movement Workshop
When: Saturday, January 25, 11am-2pm
Where: Mary Quite Contrary’s House of Burlesque, 2nd Ave, Rock Island
Cost: $35 for MWC members / $45 nonmembers
This workshop aims to connect minds to bodies and encourage self-empowerment. Our bodies are our homes and in our daily lives, we are forced to separate body from mind. In this two-part, one-day workshop, we will get to know our bodies and connect our creative lives to our physical lives.
Through a holistic and empowered lens, burlesque performer Mary Quite Contrary will lead participants through one hour of burlesque movements that will connect sensuality to the day-to-day. There will be a water and snack break, following which, writer Sarah Elgatian will follow with a writing practice that uses the body as a grounding space for our physical work.
Writers are not required to write from any particular perspective but there will be some emphasis on the sensual. This workshop is for writers and movers of all levels who are 18 years old or older. No physical or literary experience is required, nor is any specific clothing.
Regrettably, this space is not accessible for folks using wheelchairs. Please contact us if you would like to participate and are unsure if your mobility needs will be met.
Tuition waivers are available with preference to queer people of color.

Sarah Elgatian is a mixed-identity writer whose cross-genre work has appeared in or is forthcoming from journals including Beholder Magazine, the Iowa Writers’ House print anthology We The Interwoven, and BRINK Literary. She is involved with community organizing and works at the Midwest Writing Center. Sarah likes bright colors, dark coffee, loud music, and long sentences. She dislikes meanness and corporate farming.
Mary Quite Contrary opened Mary Quite Contrary’s House of Burlesque as a safe space.
From Mary:
We are a Queer/ Woman Owned production. I founded Mary Quite Contrary’s House of Burlesque to provide a safe, and inclusive space for performers. MQCHOB’s number one goal is to deliver body positivity and self empowerment through a creative art form. Another way we like to spread self empowerment is through our classes, just like we will do for this experience.
This workshop is made possible thanks to the support of the Illinois Arts Council.
