Brink Books’ full-length anthology of hybrid writing, Malleable and True, is an innovative collection for readers, writers, and educators that explores the complexity and craft of hybrid writing. This anthology is also a workbook in which the writers of each piece explore the craft behind the work and offer prompts based on their work.
The Midwest Writing Center, in collaboration with Brink Books, brings this project to life by bringing four Brink contributors to the Quad Cities to teach from Malleable and True. Each of four sessions will focus on a piece of writing from Brink and, using its author’s methods, assist participants in generating new work.
Hybrid writing is any writing that bends or exists outside of genre norms. This workshop encourages writers to explore writing styles and forms they may have felt inaccessible, against the rules, or challenging to them.
Registration is $135 for MWC members, and $175 for non-MWC members. Each registration comes with a copy of Malleable and True. A limited number of scholarships are available for students, teachers, veterans, and those with financial need; form is available on the MWC website.
Instructors will include:
Alisha Jeddeloh (Editor in Chief of Brink Books) is a writer and editor based in Iowa City. As a writer, she explores community, belonging, and the fault lines in the stories we tell each other and ourselves. As an editor, she enjoys being surprised by characters and prose. She is always on the brink of starting a new book when she’s already reading several others.
Jessie Kraemer is a writer and artist. She holds an MFA in Nonfiction and an MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa. She is winner of the 2024 Mississippi Review Prize in Nonfiction. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in North American Review, Chicago Quarterly Review, Brink, and elsewhere. Her essay “The Wright Brother” was listed as Notable in Best American Essays 2021. Her comic “Your Daily Horsecope” can be read in the Little Village. She is currently working on a book about the flawed logics of Effective Altruism and love.
Sarah Elgatian is a mixed-identity writer whose cross-genre work has appeared in, or is forthcoming from, journals including BRINK, Spoon River Poetry Review and Cutleaf. She works at the Midwest Writing Center to make writing accessible and joyful. The grandchild of genocide survivors, Sarah stands in solidarity with oppressed people at home and abroad. Likes: bright colors, dark coffee, loud music, long sentences. Dislikes: meanness, corporate farming.
