A Crash on Flash: How to Write FLASHY Short Fiction — Workshop Registration open

By definition Flash Fiction is a story of 1,000 words or less, but what makes for a great piece of flash? In this two-hour class, we’ll study examples from modern masters of the short form, discover the “Elements of Flashy Flash Fiction,” and write compelling stories of our own. Packed with tips, techniques, and prompts, this class will help writers of all levels create short fiction that shines.

Iron Pen 2022 – Registration is Open!

The fastest writing contest in the Quad Cities is back and taking registrations now!

The Midwest Writing Center is taking registrations for its 14th annual Iron Pen Contest. MWC will supply a prompt to all contestants at 5 p.m. on Friday, February 25th and contestants have 24 hours (entries are due Saturday, February 26th by 5 p.m.) to write and submit their best fiction, non-fiction, and/or poetry pieces. Writers are welcome to enter into as many categories as they like with a paid registration for each entry.

Midwinter Day: A Virtual Reading to Benefit Bernadette Mayer — December 22, 6pm CST

Join us to celebrate the anniversary of Midwinter Day and to benefit poet Bernadette Mayer, “the mother of us all.” Over forty years after Mayer composed the book-length poem on one winter day in 1978, writing organizations across the country are joining forces to host readings in honor of foundational feminist poet Bernadette Mayer. This year the Midwest Writing Center and Iowa City Poetry are teaming up to host the event in Iowa.
