Fall for Fiction: MWC offers a range of fiction-related programming this September

This fall, MWC is offering several fiction-related workshops and performances. Here are three highlights of our upcoming programming schedule:

  1. Fall Novel Workshop Series, “From Preparation to Publishing: The Craft of Novel-Writing” led by award-winning novelist Larry Baker

    LarryBaker94Web 3Six-session novel workshop running on the second Tuesdays of the month September-November (6 sessions total). Registration includes a copy of Baker’s latest book THE EDUCATION OF NANCY ADAMS.

  2. Great River Writers Retreat Reading, featuring Keith Lesmeister – Thursday, September 10th, 7pm at MWC

    As the winner of the 2015 Great River Writers Retreat, Keith will be spending a week (September 6-12) concentrating on his writing at Benet House in Rock Island, Illinois. He will celebrate his experience in the area and share some of the writing he worked on during the retreat at the reading, which will take place at Midwest Writing Center on the third floor of Bucktown Center for the Arts, 225 E. 2nd Street in Downtown Davenport, Iowa. Light refreshments will also be served.

    headshot_KLemeisterKeith Lesmeister lives on a small farm in northeast Iowa. His stories and essays have appeared in Tin House Online, American Short Fiction, Meridian, Redivider, River Teeth, Harpur Palate, Columbia Review, Flyway, and many others. He has stories forthcoming in Gettysburg Review, Slice Magazine, and december. He teaches creative writing at Luther College and Northeast Iowa Community College.

    SPECTRA is thrilled to be putting on this event, the first time MWC has ever done an event in this terrific venue, featuring some of the three of the most exciting writers in American fiction. Here’s more information from the tour press release:
    Three innovative writers take to the road at the end of September in a series of free, public events.

    Writers Amelia Gray ( Gutshot, FSG/featherproof books), Aaron Burch (Backswing , Hobart/SFLD) and Colin Winnette (Haints Stay, Two Dollar Radio/Les Figues Press) take to the road Sep 28 – Oct 2, 2015 in a tour of colleges, reading series, and other local venues.

    “We’ve threatened to go on the road again for years now,” Amelia Gray said of the tour, which follows up on the Dollar Store Tour and the High Emission Tour of 2009 and 2010, respectively. “This was just the bad idea we needed to get back to the Midwest.”

    Amelia Gray is the author of four books, most recently Gutshot (FSG 2015). Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Tin House , and VICE . She lives in Los Angeles.

    Aaron Burch
    is the founding editor of Hobart and the author of three books, most recently Backswing (Queen’s Ferry Press). He lives in Ann Arbor, MI, where he teaches at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University.

    Colin Winnette
    is the author of five books, including the SPD Best Seller Coyote (Les Figues Press 2015) and Haints Stay (Two Dollar Radio 2015). His writing has appeared in McSweeneys , Lucky Peach , The American Reader , and Gulf Coast . He is the associate editor of PANK magazine, and he lives in San Francisco.
