Kent Barnds has worked in college admissions for 24 years and has reviewed thousands of college essays; some have been amazing, while others have not. Come learn what it takes to write an excellent college essay. This session will explore the importance of the college essay as part of the college admissions process. Examples of compelling essays will be used as examples and participants will be provided with tips on writing a great college essay. Participants will be actively engaged in topic ideation and asked to craft an engaging essay introduction.

Bio for W. Kent Barnds:
W. Kent Barnds is executive vice president and vice president of enrollment, communication and planning at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. He leads a team of admissions, financial aid and communication professionals numbering nearly 40. He is a thought leader on a variety of higher education topics ranging from college admission interviews and essays to the value of a four-year degree from a private college.
He has published articles in Inside Higher Ed, University Business Magazine, Denver Post, and The Huffington Post, and has served as a higher education enrollment expert to local and national media such as The Chronicle of Higher Education, Washington Post, The Daily Beast, U.S. News and World Report, and The Wall Street Journal. He has written about staff development and performance management in admissions, and has developed a set of performance assessment tools to use in college admissions. He is a frequent presenter on topics about affordability, value and worth as they relate to the college experience.
